Frequently Asked Questions

We answer the most common questions about catalytic converters, Direct Fit, mufflers and vehicle emissions testing.

What is a catalytic converter and what is it for?

It is the exhaust-system part that converts the engine’s harmful gases (carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides) into less harmful ones. It is essential to reduce emissions and to pass vehicle emissions testing.

What is a Direct Fit converter?

It is a converter designed for a specific vehicle that bolts directly into the original location with no cutting or adaptation. AM Exhaust offers a Direct Fit line by vehicle application.

How do I find the right converter for my vehicle?

In the Applications section you can find the compatible converter by selecting make, sub-make, engine and year. If in doubt, the AM Exhaust team can help you from the Contact section.

What is the difference between the domestic, export, heavy-duty and performance lines?

The domestic line targets the vehicle fleet in Mexico; the export line targets foreign markets; the heavy-duty line is for cargo vehicles and large engines; and the performance line is for higher-flow exhaust systems. All can be browsed in the Store and the Tech Sheets.

Do your converters help pass vehicle emissions testing?

A catalytic converter in good condition is required to pass the emissions test. To get tested, visit an authorized PIREC workshop; in the PIREC Workshops section you can find one by municipality.

What is a PIREC workshop?

It is a workshop authorized under the emissions-reduction program (PIREC) to perform vehicle emissions testing. AM Exhaust keeps a directory of PIREC workshops filterable by municipality.

Do you sell to workshops and distributors (wholesale)?

Yes. AM Exhaust serves workshops, distributors and testing centers. Distributors have their own portal with wholesale pricing; to get an account, contact us from the Contact section.

Do you make mufflers and exhaust systems besides converters?

Yes. Besides catalytic converters, AM Exhaust manufactures mufflers and exhaust-system components (tubing, flex joints, connectors, tips and more).

Do you have a downloadable catalog?

Yes, in the Catalogs section you can download the product catalogs in PDF by product line.

Where are you located and how do I contact you?

AM Exhaust (American Muffler) is located in El Marqués, Querétaro, Mexico. You can reach the team by phone or email from the site’s Contact section.
